In the Drawer Marketing
by Brenda Stone

I have a drawer under my copier with a few little odds and ends in it for
marketing. As much as I long to talk about my marketing drawer, and as much as I
pine to handle my goodies and daydream about more marketing ideas, this article
is not about my marketing drawer contents. It's about getting into the sights of
the hiring entity.
- How can you stay in sight of the ones who call notaries?
- How can you
burn yourself into their sub-consciousness minds and be remembered when
opportunity is available for you?
I want to talk about how to get "yourself" into a desk drawer and wind up
staying there for awhile. Expensive pens often "walk off." My guess is that
business cards often miss their mark. Even so, add a few to each package you
send back, but while we are at it lets inventory my marketing drawer to see how
I use my lightweight trinkets for "in the drawer marketing."
The goal of "In the Drawer Marketing" is to by-pass the wastebasket and to be
visible all the time to those who call upon notaries. See if you
don't think they will keep these items awhile. After all, they are
definitely "useful" things.
In my drawer I have flower seeds, decks of playing cards, and little packages of
painkillers and other little reasonably flat, lightweight items which can get
hooked into by a catch-phrase, albeit often times corny catch-phrases.
And, oh, look-- right here we have the main ingredient of my "In the Drawer
Marketing" drawer -- the pre-printed sheet of labels. Silver foil, gold foil, clear and
cheap white ones.
Pre-printed? So what's on them? Here's a random sampling:

Here's what you do with these labels:
Labels #1 and #2 are the generic ones. You can stick them on anything small and
nearly weightless and send it back in a package if you are working for a title
company or a lender.
Label #3 - Go to Sam's and get a stack of little individually packaged
Tylenol.
That's right - use these to tell your clients you will continue to provide "no
headaches" for them.
Label #4 - These are for those packages of flower seeds you can pick up around
town in places like the Dollar Store or Walgreen's for $.05 each.
Label #5 -
Poker's big these days. "Tickle" the recipient with a deck of cards.
Put your label and there and
be ready to stand behind your guarantee. Let them know they are not gambling
when it comes to you.
The key is to be prepared. Purchase these products and keep them on
hand for returning packages.
Put the item in a white business envelope and address it to "closing dept."
or any contact you may have. Don't put, "to my wonderful client" or you'll
never get it to the right person.
It's my goal to flag a few extra dollars for seed packets of bluebonnets
because you are not going to find them for the nickel see packaging. Texas
is famous for bluebonnets! If I were in New Mexico or Arizona I would send
cactus seeds.
